Is This the Right Class for You?

Advanced Beginner 1 is for adults who have completed Beginner 1–4 with German4FUN or have equivalent A1 knowledge. It is not a class for complete beginners.

You’re probably ready for this next step if you can do most of the following. You do not need to be perfect—occasional mistakes and a little review are normal.

✔ I can ask and answer simple questions about myself and everyday life, including work, shopping, travel, celebrations, weather, and clothing.
Examples: Ich arbeite in Milton. · Wann hast du Geburtstag? · Ich möchte eine Fahrkarte nach Berlin. · Heute ist es kalt.
✔ I can understand short everyday texts and slowly spoken German, and write a simple message or invitation.
Examples: Der Zug fährt um 10 Uhr ab. · Liebe Anna, kommst du am Samstag? Wir feiern meinen Geburtstag.
✔ I can build simple statements and questions using present-tense verbs, separable verbs, modal verbs, negation, and basic instructions.
Examples: Ich rufe dich morgen an. · Kannst du am Montag kommen? · Ich habe keine Zeit. · Gehen Sie geradeaus!
✔ I can talk about past events using Perfekt with haben and sein, and use war and hatte.
Examples: Ich habe gestern gearbeitet. · Wir sind nach Berlin gefahren. · Ich war müde und hatte keine Zeit.
✔ I can use basic Nominativ and Akkusativ patterns, possessive words and pronouns, and Dativ with familiar prepositions such as mit, bei, and zu.
Examples: Das ist mein Bruder. Ich kenne ihn gut. · Ich fahre mit dem Bus. · Ich bin bei meiner Schwester.

These points are a starting guide, not a placement test. In the interest form, check the statements that describe what you can usually do and mention anything you’d like to review.

Beginner 4 or Advanced Beginner 1?

Choose Beginner 4 if you have completed the earlier A1 material but still need to learn the final A1 topics—such as celebrations and invitations, weather and clothing, and practical travel situations.

Choose Advanced Beginner 1 if you have completed the full A1 level, including those topics, and can use most of the skills above in simple conversations and tasks. You do not need perfect grammar; needing a little review is normal.

Knowing a few example sentences is not the same as being comfortable with the whole level. If you’re between the two, join the interest list and describe what you’ve studied. I’ll help you choose.

You do not need to have learned with me before to express your interest. If you’re unsure about your level, email teacher.gesa@gmail.com, and I’ll help you find the right next step.

What You’ll Learn in Advanced Beginner 1

A2 Part 1 covers chapters 1–4. You’ll build on your A1 foundation to say more about your experiences, explain your reasons, compare things, and handle more everyday situations.

Chapter 1 · Travel & Cities

Talk about trips and past experiences, describe a city, understand and give directions, and report a lost item.

Build on Perfekt with inseparable verbs and practice route prepositions and connectors such as und, oder, aber, and deshalb.

Examples: Ich habe meine Tasche verloren. · Gehen Sie durch den Park.

Chapter 2 · Goals & Wishes

Talk about wishes and reasons for moving abroad, make phone calls, ask about courses, and make polite requests.

Explain reasons with weil and make polite requests with könnte.

Examples: Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich in Deutschland arbeiten möchte. · Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?

Chapter 3 · Hobbies & Comparisons

Describe hobbies, share opinions, compare things, and talk about events.

Use clauses with dass, plus the Komparativ and Superlativ.

Examples: Ich finde, dass Schwimmen Spaß macht. · Mein Fahrrad ist schneller. · Dieser Film ist am besten.

Chapter 4 · Television & Descriptions

Understand a TV schedule, talk about programmes and viewing habits, and describe people.

Practice was für ein, adjective endings after indefinite and negative articles, and words beginning with un-.

Examples: Was für einen Film möchtest du sehen? · Das ist ein spannender Film. · Ich habe keinen freien Abend.

We’ll also practice listening, reading, writing, speaking, and pronunciation—including word stress and unfamiliar sounds.

Your A2 Learning Path

Advanced Beginner 1 begins the A2 learning path. A2 is divided into four classes: Advanced Beginner 1–4.

Expect the same supportive, structured approach: clear explanations, guided practice, and opportunities to use German with other adult learners.

The next steps after A2 are B1 (Intermediate) and B2 (Upper Intermediate), each also divided into four classes.
